Laying bricks is far more complex work than many people imagine, up until they give it a go anyway. It is far more complex than it tends to be given credit for. But one thing that stays true through all the different methods and different ideas depending on what you are building is – you need high quality tools to be able to do a high quality job.

Whether that means the materials that you are using, or the tools that you are utilizing to complete the job, that is a truism that continues throughout the process. And never is that more true than it is with the brick trowel.

Of course for many of us buying a brick trowel (sometimes known as a masonry trowel) is far from a common sense purchase, we don’t know what aspects of the brick trowel we should be comparing when we are deciding on a purchase. Which is why we have this quick guide.

Buying a Brick Trowel

There are a number of things that you should be considering when buying a brick trowel, including but not limited to…

  • Strength. Trowels tend to come in for some punishment, so strength is vital. Look for strong metals, treated materials and ideally solid forged single piece of carbon steel, stopping it breaking at joins.
  • Flexibility. Because they come in for punishment, and because you tend to put pressure at certain points but want a universal pressure ‘buttering’ motion you need a certain amount of flexibility from the brick trowel.
  • Handle. You will be using the brick trowel a lot so you NEED to ensure that the handle is comfortable, designed for regular use rather than simply being a cylinder shaped tube. The angle of the handle can also help with reducing any wrist strain.
